The gift of love from God is the only gift we’ll ever need.
…you are not lacking in any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ….
1 Corinthians 1:7
With just under three weeks until Christmas Day, have completed your gift shopping?
Some people are easy to shop for.
Others, not so much.
You would think that it would be easier to shop for someone you know really well as opposed to those you don’t know at all.
Actually, shopping for people you don’t know is easy, at least I think it is. Just get them a gift card!
I know my wife better than any other person on the planet. I know her better than anyone else does.
Yet, I struggle with getting her a Christmas gift each year. And a gift card just doesn’t cut it!
There are other gifts that I would not (should not ever) get for my wife at Christmas.
A vacuum cleaner, for example. Or a mop. Oh, she may need those things or even want those things.
But never for Christmas! Guys, if you are married, never, ever, buy your wife something that goes along with household chores – at least, not for a Christmas present. Just trust me on this one.
You would think that the better you know a person, the easier it is to find a gift for that person. And maybe it is easier for you. But not me.
I think it is because I psyche myself out on it. I want the Christmas gift I get for my wife to be the perfect gift, one that she will love forever and never forget.
I think I’m setting my own bar too high.
Still, I try. And I enjoy trying. Because I love my wife and I thoroughly enjoy getting gifts for my wife.
We who celebrate Christmas give gifts at this time of year because God gave us the greatest, ultimate, and perfect gift at Christmas – his Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Chris and the salvation he won for all of us is the ultimate gift. So much so, that St. Paul says that when we have this gift we are not lacking in any gift.
The gift of salvation is all we needed, all we need, and all we’ll ever need.
Our salvation from sin, death, and the power of the devil will sustain us to the very end of time, when Jesus Christ returns.
Our salvation, the ultimate gift of love from God, shapes every aspect of our lives.
We still like to receive Christmas gifts and like to give Christmas gifts.
But the gift of love from God is the only gift we’ll ever need.
Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of salvation through your Son, Jesus Christ. Thank you for the Christmas season and the joy of giving and receiving gifts. Help me to also give the gift of the Gospel to everyone I meet. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
