The Holly and the Ivy

And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”
Luke 2:34-35

How’s this for a Christmas symbol?

Blood and spikes.

That doesn’t sound very Christmas-y does it? Truth be told, blood and spikes sound more appropriate for Holy Week and Good Friday or – for the less religious – Halloween.

But the symbol of blood and spikes is very Christmas-y!

Only we don’t usually refer to it in this way. Not “blood and spikes” but rather, the holly and the ivy!

Christmas Moments II is a series on the True Man Podcast.

On each episode in the series, Ed Blonski shares a devotional story about a Christmas song. You’ll then hear an original arrangement by Richard Souther.

The stories come from the book Christmas Moments II – An Epic Journey of Biblical Proportion. You can purchase a paperback copy here (and you’ll get a Kindle version for free!).
