What Child Is This?

And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.
Luke 2:7

A manager of a maritime insurance company in Scotland – William Chatterton Dix, himself just a young man – had his world shaken to its very core when he was struck with an illness that left him bedridden and depressed for months.

After reading Luke 2, Dix would write a poem he called “The Manger Throne.” It told the story of Christmas, the birth of Christ who would be the Savior of the world, the visiting shepherds, and Christians who would no longer see the baby Jesus but the glorious Lord of all who would return in majesty on the Last Day.

But it would be the story of the Shepherds’ visit that Dix would rework into a hymn, a Christmas carol, called “What Child Is This?”

Christmas Moments II is a series on the True Man Podcast.

On each episode in the series, Ed Blonski shares a devotional story about a Christmas song. You’ll then hear an original arrangement by Richard Souther.

The stories come from the book Christmas Moments II – An Epic Journey of Biblical Proportion. You can purchase a paperback copy here (and you’ll get a Kindle version for free!).

  1. there were sooo many wonderful Christmas carols at your church, Pastor Blonski…I was so happy to be a part of our choir to sing them all.
