Christmas Holiday Break

The weekday devotions will be back starting January 2, 2018.

In the meantime, here’s a devotion from Christmas Moments – In My Father’s Footsteps, Volume 2.

What Christmas Is All About

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
Luke 2:8-14 KJV

Charlie Brown is depressed because he doesn’t understand Christmas. And why should he? All he’s heard about Christmas has been from the culture and their explanation of Christmas. “It’s run by an Eastern Syndicate, you know!” He’s been told that the trappings of Christmas are “shiny, aluminum Christmas trees. Maybe painted pink!”

When he’s chosen to direct the Christmas play, he finds out that all the players think that Christmas – while involving shepherds, an inn-keeper’s wife with naturally curly red hair, and every animal imaginable – is really about great jazz music and dancing!

But then Charlie Brown is told what Christmas is really all about.

[Luke 2:8-14 KJV]

Charlie Brown was told the Gospel! And it changed everything! He gets it now. His heart is lighter. There’s a smile on his face. There’s a joy in his step.

He goes out into the clear night and relives those Gospel words again, looking into the starry creation of God the Father Almighty.

But then he comes upon the culture’s idea of Christmas yet again. Snoopy has won first prize in the neighborhood decorating contest. For a brief moment, Charlie Brown loses his joy as the culture invades with its view of Christmas.

But then he hears the song of the angels, sees first-hand the results of man’s goodwill (the kids decorate his tree for him). And joy returns.

That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown!
