Then the Lord called Samuel….
And the Lord called again….
… the Lord called Samuel again the third time…
And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times….
1 Samuel 3:4, 6, 8, 10
If I Could Go Back In Time and Talk to My 20-Year-Old Self
I was asked recently if I had any advice on dating.
Now, I haven’t dated anyone other than my wife in nearly thirty years, so I don’t think my dating advice would be too terribly helpful.
Instead, I responded by telling them what I would tell my 20-year-old self if I could go back in time and give myself some advice.
I would tell myself to relax! Relax about the whole relationship thing!
You see, more often than not I entered into a dating relationship thinking about the future, marriage, kids, the whole kit and caboodle.
That tended to put a damper on any dating relationship I had, as you can probably imagine.
I should have just relaxed and enjoyed myself and put more effort and time into building and strengthening my relationship with God. The whole “seek first his kingdom and righteousness” sort of thing.
Christ Called on Me and Interrupted My Life
As I didn’t relax because I was not able to go back in time to tell myself to, there came a point when Christ called on me and interrupted my life.
It took a while, just as it did for Samuel. Samuel was called by God four times before Sam figured out what was going on.
Samuel was actually serving in God’s house when God came a-calling. I suspect that Samuel had his own life pretty much paved out and planned. He would continue to serve in the Tabernacle as a priest and that would be his life.
But God interrupted these plans and Samuel’s life by calling him to be a prophet and the last Judge of Israel!
Christ came and called me away from the life I thought I was going to live. I planned on being a robotic engineer and computer programmer. But that life was interrupted by God and I was called into the Pastoral Ministry.
God Has a Way of Interrupting Our Lives
God has a way of interrupting our lives, especially when our life paths are different from the ones he wants us to take.
For everyone, God wants our lives to be one that is a beautiful relationship with him. He sent Jesus Christ to remove the barriers of sin, death, and the devil.
However, this often comes in the form of an interrupted life when God calls us. Sometimes God has to remove the things in our life that get in the way of the path he has called us to.
This is what God did to me when I was in my twenties.
Oh, and by the way, once I did figure it out and start to relax and enjoying myself when it came to dating, I met Nancy and we’ve been married for over twenty-six years with three outstanding young men as our sons!
You Never Know When God Will Call and Interrupt Your Life
God interrupted my life when he called me when I was in my twenties.
Samuel’s life was interrupted by God when he called him at about age twelve.
God interrupted Moses’ life when he was 80.
Abraham’s life was interrupted when God called him at about age 90!
It doesn’t matter to God what age you are.
What does matter is that God wants a relationship with you and sent Jesus to establish that relationship through his sacrifice on the cross.
To be called by God means that the old, sinful life is interrupted and a new, eternal life is begun!
Heavenly Father, thank you for interrupting my life and calling me to be your own. Help me to live my life for you and to your glory. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
