Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Your Body Is a Temple
In the last year or so I’ve heard someone’s story of their battle with an eating disorder.
At one point, she was so deep into the addiction and disorder that she was literally nothing but skin and bones. Still, she would exercise and diet because she felt she was “fat.”
Her eating disorder is a disease that she has to continually deal with. It had caused her to think of her body as her own that she must constantly get under control at all costs.
Thankfully, she sought help before it was too late. God sent several people into her life to help her see that her body was, in fact, not hers to do with as she pleased or something that she needed to control.
She was actually God’s daughter and he loved her very, very much.
It was a long, hard road for her, but God has performed many miracles in her life and has shown her just how much he loves her. She now tells her story to help others overcome this mindset of having to control their bodies.
Some Have the Mindset “It’s My Body – I’ll Do What I Want With It”
There are others who look at their bodies in a different way.
Those who identify themselves as “pro-choice” usually take the position that a person’s body is their own and that what happens to it is their own choice and no one else’s business.
Those who advocate a pro-life stance tend to get belittled and vilified in the American media and by those who usually identify with the political left. “Pro-lifers” often hear the cry to “mind your own business!”
This philosophy has led, directly or indirectly, to between 40 and 50 million abortions in the world each year.
The concept that “it’s my body so I can do what I want with it” also paves the way for drug abuse, alcohol abuse, eating disorders, and the list goes on and on.
It is, in Fact, NOT Your Body
But the Biblical truth is that it is, in fact, not your body. You are not your own, to do with as you please.
God has purchased and won you with the precious blood of his Son, Jesus Christ!
Your body is not your own. It is, in fact, a temple of the Holy Spirit. This is another way of saying that you are God’s! He sent Jesus to remove the barriers to the relationship he wants to have with you.
It Can be Hard to Think About Being Someone Else’s
I appreciate how hard it is to think of our bodies and ourselves as belonging to someone else. It is part of the reason that I struggle with my weight.
It is, I imagine, part of the reason other people struggle with addictions and eating disorders, and what-not.
What is comforting to me is knowing that God knows this! And he’s actively involved in helping us overcome the challenges! He gave us his Word to do so. He gave us each other in the Church to help.
I pray that I will seek that help and be that help. I pray you will join me.
Heavenly Father, help me to see that I am not my own, that I belong to you because Jesus paid the price for me in his shed blood on the cross. Help me to share this loving relationship with others. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
