To those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 1:2-3
Being Sanctified is an Amazing Thing
One summer, when I was 18 years old, I walked into a game store near my town. I’ve always enjoyed role-playing games, computer adventure games, and other board games. I had passed this store several times driving through town and I finally went in to explore.
I didn’t leave until seven the next morning!
The owner of the shop was starting a new role-playing game campaign and asked me if I wanted to join the group. As I didn’t have anything else to do, I said yes.
The game was based on The Lord of Rings – with battles against evil orcs and wizards. I played a ranger that was proficient with a long sword. In our group was a wizard like Gandalf, hobbits and elves.
There was also a cleric in our group who would “bless” the group when we went into battle. The leader/narrator of the campaign would describe our “blessing” as a golden aura shinning around us during the battle.
I imagine this to be similar to what it means to be “sanctified” by God. Maybe not a literal golden aura around us, but still empowered with God’s love, protection and strength when we do battle with evil and the devil.
We’re Not Perfect – Just Forgiven
Jesus Christ died to forgive our sins. When the Holy Spirit gives us the faith to receive this forgiveness, we are sanctified.
That means that we are set apart for a special purpose. We could also be described as being “holy.”
But not in the sense that we are perfect or without sin. No one is perfect except Jesus and those already in heaven.
Being holy, or sanctified, means that God has made us his own children. Sanctified is how a sinner is, at the same time, a saint.
A sanctified person is one who has the love, protection and strength of God to do his will in this world.
We do this to bring him glory and to help our neighbors. A sanctified person tells others about Jesus Christ and serves others with the love of God.
Being Sanctified by Jesus is One of the Reasons He Came
The reason we are sanctified is solely by Jesus alone. He is the perfect God who became a human being. He took all our sins on himself and paid the price for them on the cross. He takes our sins away.
In their place he gives us his righteousness, his holiness, and that is when we become sanctified.
That’s where our sanctified life begins, with Jesus. We live to tell others about Christ. And in the telling, the Holy Spirit can bring faith to these people and they can, in turn, also become sanctified.
I may not have a golden aura around me – wouldn’t that be weird looking – but I am sanctified. And I live, now, to tell others about Jesus.
Will you join me?
Heavenly Father, thank you for saving me from my sins. Thank you for making me sanctified. Help me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to live the sanctified life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
