When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless, that I may make my covenant between me and you, and may multiply you greatly.”
99 Years Old
I’ve been confronted with “99 years old” three times in the last couple of days.
First, the Rev. Billy Graham died at age 99 last week. It made me stop and really think about it.
Literally my whole life, Billy Graham has been active in preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. During my first preaching class at the seminary, we watched a video of Billy Graham preaching – it was powerful stuff!
And now he’s gone. Well, not gone, really. He had faith in Jesus, he believed in Christ. He was baptized. And I believe the Scripture that says, “Whoever believes and is baptize will be saved.”
Billy Graham was 99 years old when he died.
Active and Vibrant
This past weekend, our congregation celebrated the birthday of the oldest living member of our church. He is, you guessed it, 99 years old.
He is still active and vibrant, walks everyday around the building that he lives in. He’s a faithful man of God who continues to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with everyone he meets.
When I asked him in Bible class what it felt like to be 99, he said he doesn’t really know, that it doesn’t feel much different than being 98. He also told us that we need to take life one day at a time, that was his secret to a long life.
The third instance of confronting “99 years old” is the Old Testament lesson from this past weekend in Genesis 17:1-2.
Abraham was 99 years old and God came to him and reiterated the covenant he made with him.
Abraham would be given a land to live in, many descendants and that all nations on the earth would be blessed through him.
Part of the covenant that God made with Abraham was that he and his wife Sarah would have a baby son.
These three instances of “99 years old” showed me that age doesn’t really matter to God. God will come to you, bless you, and use who for his kingdom work no matter what age you are.
One man died at age 99. God promised another that he would be a father. A third is still active in his church ministry.
Too Old? Too Young?
How will God use you to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Think you are too young? Too old?
Don’t bet on it. God can use you, no matter what your age.
Heavenly Father, thank you for using people – no matter their age – to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In his name, amen.
