This is Part 3 of “Repentance and Forgiveness of Sins” where we’ll explore forgiveness.
And [Jesus] said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
Forgiveness of Sins
The forgiveness of sins is the reason Jesus died!
The forgiveness of sins is ours through the Gospel! And the Gospel is that Jesus was …
Born to be our substitute.
Lived perfectly to be our righteousness by faith.
Died on the cross to forgive all the sins of all people of all time.
Rose again so that we might rise from the grave one day …
Alleluia! Christ is risen!
And ascended into heaven with the promise to return and give all believers in Christ eternal life in heaven.
This is the Gospel. This is what Jesus wants us to proclaim to all nations.
Comes To Us By Faith Alone
Because this is what comes to us by faith alone. Isn’t that reassuring? We don’t to have to come up with eloquent words or profound statements.
All we have to do is tell people about Jesus and the Holy Spirit does all the rest!
And, it comes by faith alone!
So we proclaim repentance for the forgiveness of sins to all nations!
Repentance is turning away from sin and a willingness to learn from God.
In addition to these two steps of repentance there is a third step. It is this third step that helps us understand what we do with repentance and the forgiveness of sins.
Resolve not to Continue in Sin
In Job 34:32 it says
if I have done iniquity, I will do it no more’
In other words, resolve not to sin any more! Tall order, to be sure. Study of God’s Word. Worship with brothers and sisters in Christ, partaking of Holy Communion – when appropriate, and personal prayer and devotion time all will help you in your resolve.
Most of all, it will be the Holy Spirit that gives you the power to so resolve.
That is the promise of God, as Jesus says, “I will send him to you….” And “he will guide you into all the truth….” (John 16: 7, 13).
The truth of repentance for the forgiveness of sins that we – as individuals and as a congregation – proclaim to all nations.
Heavenly Father, as you call me to change direction – to repent – I pray that I will heed the prompting of the Holy Spirit and turn back toward you. Thank you for forgiving my sin through the birth, life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ. In His name I pray. Amen.
