Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh….
Behind the Scenes
In 1998, my wife and I took our three-year-old Eddie on a road trip to Washington D.C.
I admit, that trip was more for me then it was for him. He doesn’t remember it at all (thankfully, he went as 8th grader and remembers that well).
One of my favorite parts of the trip was taking a tour in the Capitol Building. Walking through the galleries of the two houses of Congress, seeing the Rotunda, Statuary Hall, and the old Senate Chamber.
But my favorite part of that tour was seeing “behind the scenes.” We contacted our local representative in Wisconsin and he arranged a personal tour just for us. We were able to visit parts of the Capitol that are not on the official tour program.
There is something special about being allowed in places that we normally would not – or could not – go.
There is one place that no one was allowed to go except one person, and even then, only once a year.
The nation of Israel’s High Priest, established around 1400 BC, was the only one who was allowed to go into the Holy of Holies of the Temple.
Once a year, he would go in there to make atonement for himself and the entire nation of Israel.
This ended for good with the destruction of the Temple in AD 70.
But by then there was no need for the High Priest nor the Holy of Holies.
Originally, there was a veil that prevented anyone from seeing what was in this place. Although we are told that in it was the Ark of the Covenant.
Holy Places Opened
When Jesus Christ died on the cross, we are told that the veil that hid the Holy of Holies was torn in two, top to bottom.
This signified that this closed-off place was forever opened. What had to happen there only once of year by one man now was fully completed and now not needed.
Jesus Christ became the once-and-for-all High Priest who takes away our sin.
The Holy of Holies was where God dwelled with his people. It was forbidden for just anyone at any time to come into his presence.
But now Jesus has given us access to God. He has opened for us the way to God the Father. We can now approach God, receive the forgiveness of our sins, and live the life God created to live.
When you feel that you can’t talk to God or even approach him, know that Jesus Christ removed all that blocked you!
By the blood of Jesus, your faith has freed you from sin! The way is opened for you to the life God created you for!
Heavenly Father, thank you for Jesus who has opened the way to you. Thank you for the forgiveness of my sins through the blood of Jesus. Give me your Holy Spirit that I may leave behind all that was hindering me, so that I may live for you! In Jesus’ name. Amen.
