“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.”
Isaiah 55:10-11

When I was a young boy, I loved to build models of World War II airplanes. They came in kits that, when first opened, looked so daunting.

But once the instructions are read, and followed, the model slowly took shape. It would take me a couple of days to complete, but once I was done, I would hang the model from some fishing line in my bedroom

A feeling of accomplishment would warm my heart. I felt good about the accomplished model!

Rain & Snow

I realize this might seem like a jarring change of subject, but I hope you’ll stick with me on this.

Recently, we experienced a nice rainfall here on the Illinois prairie. After nearly a month without rain, God provide a decent soaking rain for us.

This reminds us that God sends rain to accomplish something. In our case, providing the vegetation and crops much needed rain to continue their growing.

In much the same way, snow comes in the wintertime here. It provides much needed moisture for the soil that will eventually melt and soak in deep, to be used in the spring and summer months.

God’s Word

This is the picture that the prophet Isaiah uses to convey the truth about God’s Word. As the rain and snow come down from God and do what they are supposed to do, so does God’s Word.

Whenever God’s Word is read, it accomplishes God’s will.

Whenever the Bible is read, it transforms the reader. The story is told of Lee Strobel, an agnostic that leaned close to atheism who began an investigation into Christianity. He, of course, interviewed many Christians for his research, but with the plan to debunk the Christian faith as false and worthless.

As part of his research he attended a small congregation that met in a movie theater. He heard the Word of God preached. He also read the Bible himself.

At the end of his research he found himself as a believer in Christ and today is one of the most well-known defenders of the Christian faith, author of many books such as The Case for Christ, The Case for Faith, and others.

Whenever God’s Word is read and preached, God’s will is accomplished. And God’s will is that people realize their sin, repent, and receive the forgiveness of their sins won by Jesus Christ.

Not everyone who reads God’s Word becomes a Christian, to be sure. But everyone who reads God’s Word has the opportunity to receive Christ – and that is the will of God.

Like rain and snow, God’s Word is powerful and accomplishes what God sent it for.

Heavenly Father, every time it rains or snows, may I be reminded that you have a will for my life. Send your Holy Spirit to motivate me to pick up your Word and read it. That way, your will will be accomplished in my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
