Predicament

I say this in order that no one may delude you with plausible arguments.
Colossians 2:4 (ESV)

Predicament

I found myself in quite the predicament recently.

It was trying to actually spell the word, “predicament.” For whatever reason, I couldn’t get it right. I was spelling it so incorrectly, in fact, that my spell check couldn’t even figure it out!

But in all seriousness, I find myself in predicaments quite often.

The definition is, “a difficult, unpleasant, or embarrassing situation.”

The word is the second “P” that one of my best friends, Jeff, use in the message at the renewal of my wife and my wedding vows earlier this month.

Facing It in Marriage

We all face predicaments because of sin. That one sin committed by Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden way back near the beginning of time doomed all marriages to suffer predicaments.

What I face a lot in my marriage – and I’m not alone, I’m sure – is the temptation to believe the lies about marriage.

Lies that bombard us every day in the movies, on TV, and all over the internet.

Lies like marriage is supposed to be sunshine and lollipops all the time. And when it ceases to be that, it is perfectly okay to leave the marriage and find someone else.

The world – and the devil – present this option as a plausible argument!

The only way I can overcome this – and any – lie is by the power of God and His Word.

God’s Power and Solution

The power of God is not to be underestimated. Sometimes the temptation is to believe that God doesn’t really concern himself in the day-to-day minutiae of human existence.

But he does! He is the one who created us – lovingly, intricately and deliberately!

God is also the one who created marriage between one man and one woman for a life-long union!

The predicaments that marriage couples face stem from sin – which we all face whether married or not.

And God solved that, too! He sent Jesus to atone for the sin of the whole world. By shedding his blood and dying on the cross, Jesus forgives all our sins!

When faced with any predicament, we can say that Jesus solved it and it has no power over us!

Prayer

Heavenly Father, when I am faced with the predicament of sin, help me to confidently believe that Jesus solved it with his death and resurrection. And help me live confidently as well! In Jesus’ name. Amen.
