He will again have compassion on us; he will tread our iniquities underfoot. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.
The Depths Of God’s Majesty
About ten years ago, my mother gave me and my family an incredible gift.
She treated myself, Nancy, and the boys to a one-week vacation in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico!
Cabo is certainly a beautiful part of the world! And we certainly enjoyed ourselves.
Everyday we would sit by the pool or sit on the beach and rest, swim, eat, play, swim, and rest some more.
Each morning I would go out to the beach just before sunrise and claim our spot for the morning or the day. Watching the sunrise each morning was a deeply spiritual experience. The beach faced southeast and I had an incredible view of God’s Fourth Day creation!
The Depths Scares Me
Swimming in the Pacific Ocean was relatively safe at the place we were staying. At least if you stayed within the swimming area that was clearly marked with ropes and buoys.
It was about the third day, however, that I realized what I was looking at when I gazed due south over the water.
There was nothing on the water between me and the South Pole, about 6000 miles to the South.
That’s a lot of water. Scary. But even scarier was that it is a lot of deep water.
That kind of depth and distance scared me.
The Depths of Sin
Still, that deep water and distance is nothing compared to the depth and distance our sin puts between us and God!
Many times, I don’t give my sin much thought. Oh, I know I do it. And I ask God to forgive my sin.
But contemplating the amount of water I was looking out over, and swimming in, got me to really start thinking of what my sin does to my relationship with God.
Each morning in Cabo, I would sit in the sand as the sun came up and stare out across all that water to the south.
And I would pray that God would forgive my sin. The sin that stains my soul. That separates me from God and all the good he wants for me.
Cast into the Depths of the Sea
God answered my prayers and continues to answer my prayers! He forgives my sins every time I repent.
God forgives all sin because his Son, Jesus Christ, died on a cross to pay the penalty for all the sin of all people of all time.
The Old Testament prophet Micah wrote that God “will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.”
That is so comforting!
Initially, all that water frightened me. But now it comforts me because it shows just how completely God’s forgiveness is!
God has cast all my sins into the depths.
He will do the same for you!
Heavenly Father, I repent of my sin and ask you to forgive me for the sake of Jesus Christ and his death on the cross. I thank you for the forgiveness that is so complete that it is like something being cast into the depth of the sea. Help me to tell others of your incredible love and forgiveness. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
