Serving With True Wealth

Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce.
Psalm 3:9

Immense Wealth

As a young boy, I loved comic books. Just about every Friday, my dad would bring home comic books that he bought from the newsstand at the train station.

While my brother was a big Batman fan, I was more a fan of Archie and his pals.

But you can read just only so much about Archie, Betty, Veronica, and Jughead.

To mix things up, my dad would also bring home comic books about Scrooge McDuck and Richie Rich. Both of these characters are fantastically wealthy. Their stories are usually how their wealth is sought after by nefarious people but thwarted by doing the right thing. They also use their wealth for the greater good of people.

As a kid, I sometimes thought about what it might be like to be as wealthy as Unca Scrooge or Richie Rich. I like to think that I would use the money to do good in the world.

True Wealth

As an adult, I realize I’ll never be that wealthy. However, I must admit I still fantasize about it when I see lottery jackpots reach the half-a-billion-dollar mark (and even over $1 billion for one of the lotteries as of this writing).

But as a Christian whose vocation is to study God’s Word and share what I learn through sermons, Bible studies, and writing, I have found what true wealth really is.

It isn’t money, although that can be part of it. True wealth is also not possessions or power.

It is the gifts that God gives to each of his children. That can certainly include money, possessions and power. But the greatest gift is our salvation from sin and death.

When Jesus Christ defeated Satan through his death on the cross and his resurrection from the grave, his forgiveness and righteousness are given to us as a free gift.

That free gift is the greatest treasure we could ever imagine having. And it is ours! What would you do with it?

Honor God with Your Wealth

It is to be used to honor God. Everything God has given you should be used to honor him. Your money, your possessions, even your power.

But especially your salvation. And you honor God with your salvation by responding to his love with love.

Love for God, to be sure. We show God love by reading his Word, praying, and worshiping him regularly with brothers and sisters in Christ.

But we also honor God by loving others.

Honoring God by serving and loving others is an excellent way to use all the wealth God has given us!

Heavenly Father, help me to see that you have, indeed, given me great wealth because you have given me salvation through Jesus Christ. Help me also to use all the gifts you given me – money, possessions, power – to bring honor to you by serving and loving others. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
