Proud of Your Wall?

A wall means nothing to the Lord.

And when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, when you hear the sound of the trumpet, then all the people shall shout with a great shout, and the wall of the city will fall down flat, and the people shall go up, everyone straight before him.
Joshua 6:5

Proud of Their Wall

I bet they were pretty proud of their wall. They certainly put a lot of stock in their wall. It was built to keep people out, especially people that wanted to hurt them, fight them, and conquer them.

The people of Jericho had a problem, however.

They put their trust and faith in their wall. And in their gods. In their own power and strength. They put their faith in just about everything except where it belonged. In the one God, creator of the heavens and the earth.

Joshua now leads the newly minted Nation of Israel to their very walls. Even though it was forty years ago, the people of Jericho had heard – and remembered – the story. The plagues, the crossing of the Red Sea, and the defeat of various armies under the leadership of Moses and Joshua.

Jericho knew all of this. And now here they were, on their doorstep.

Surely their wall would keep them safe!

That hope turned into near certainty when they saw Joshua’s tactics. A daily march around the city walls?

But on the seventh day, the march lasted seven times around, then horns and shouting. And then the walls were no more.

God Knocks Down Our Walls

God has a way of knocking down our walls just as easily.

Our trust needs to be in God alone and not in the things we build for ourselves!

Don’t put your trust in your ability to create wealth and power. Faith in the almighty dollar can tumble just as easy as Jericho – ask anyone who put their trust in investments on October 29, 1929.

Don’t put your trust in your homestead value. Faith in owning a home can crash like Jericho’s bricks – ask home owners living in Southern California in 2008.

There is only one Immovable that we should put our faith and trust in – God Almighty.

Even the earth itself moves and is unstable. But God never moves, except towards us in love!

He moved heaven and earth to come near to you. That’s how much God loves you. Jesus left his heavenly throne and became a baby in Bethlehem. The earth shook the day he died to forgive your sins. The earth shook again to let the world see into his tomb, that it was empty and he was alive!

Sometimes God will move the things we have put our trust in to get us to focus on him, either again or for the first time.

That’s because he loves you and wants to spend eternity with you!

Your walls may be tumbling, but trust in God! He never will!

Heavenly father, break down the walls I’ve built up around my life and put my trust in. For the sake of your Son, Jesus, who bled and died to forgive me all my sins, help me to put my trust in you alone. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
