Narrow Christianity

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

There are numerous things Christians are accused of and criticized for. But I think the number one thing is that Christians are too narrow-minded.

Christians are accused of being exclusive, thinking that their own belief system is the only one that is correct. The criticism is that we are arrogant to think that we have the exclusive way to salvation and to heaven.

However, I believe that what the Christian faith teaches is, in reality, the most inclusive teaching on the planet!

God loves everyone in the world and seeks to have a personal relationship with every single person! There are no exclusions. It doesn’t matter to God what your skin color is. God doesn’t care what language you speak. He has no qualms seeking out the poorest of the poor or the riches of the rich.

Jesus said that “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

Even being a polytheist doesn’t matter to God. He once chose a man who worshiped numerous gods to be his own special friend.

God also chose a religious zealot and murderer to be his apostle to the nations.

Yes, Christianity is an all-inclusive faith. Everyone is welcomed.

Being Changed

But that doesn’t mean that you stay the way you came in.

God also changes each and every person he has a relationship with.

Abraham once worshiped numerous gods. But when God called him friend, he worshiped only the one, true God for the rest of his life.

Paul once persecuted people and had them killed because they happened to believe in Jesus Christ. But after Jesus called him to be his apostle to the nations, Paul traveled all over the Northern Roman Empire and proclaimed Jesus as the only Lord and Savior from sin.

The Only Way

The Christian faith is criticized for being narrow-minded. Christians are accused of being arrogant in thinking that their belief is the only true belief.

Well, you’ll get no argument out of me, actually!

Jesus said clearly that the only way to God the Father is through him. Salvation – which is for everyone – is only attained through the shed blood of Jesus Christ.

Is that narrow-minded? Probably, yes. But it is also a good thing!

There is only one way to be saved. We don’t have to worry about finding the correct way (or ways) to be saved!

God comes to us to save us. We don’t have to spend our time and efforts trying to find the right way to him.

As St. Paul told the religious Athenians, “he is actually not far from each one of us” (Acts 16:27b).

Heavenly Father, I pray for all those who are seeking – seeking you, seeking life, seeking fulfillment, or seeking purpose. Help them to see that you are all those things and that you are not far from them. I pray you to use me to help them see that you love every person and want to have a personal relationship with them. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
