The Lord Pays Attention

Out of the depths I cry to You, O LORD; O Lord, hear my voice. Let Your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy.

Psalm 130:1-2

Digging a Hole

Sometimes it doesn’t feel as if God is paying attention to me!

For an 11-year-old boy, digging a hole is great fun. I have a picture of myself in a three-foot hole with just my feet sticking out.

Having my head at the bottom of that hole was pretty neat. The sounds of the world were muffled. When I called out to my friends “above ground” I could hear myself just fine, but they had trouble hearing me.

At Rock Bottom

There are times in our lives when our sin makes us feel like we are at the bottom of a deep hole. When things are going really bad, we often refer to it as “hitting rock bottom.” We cry out but no one seems to pay attention to us.

The Lord Hears Us

But because of Jesus Christ we have the assurance that God hears us. As we cry out “Lord have mercy!” God hears us, no matter how deep our hole. How do we know? Jesus Christ died to take our sins away!  Our cry for mercy was answered when the Lord of mercy and grace sent Jesus to live, die and rise again – for us!

Plant some simple plants and put them in a special place. Write out the above scripture verse and put it on the pot you planted the seeds in.

Heavenly Father, sometimes I feel like I’m at the bottom of deep, dark hole. Depression, even despair, overwhelms my life. Hear my cry for mercy! Hear my cry for Jesus’ sake. In Jesus’ name, amen.
