All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.2 Timothy 3:16-17
The Holy Bible is an extraordinary book. It is old – the oldest passages written some 4000 years ago. It covers an immense period of time – apart from the very beginnings of the universe, it covers time from 2000 BC to about AD 100. It has been translated into hundreds, perhaps thousands, of languages. It is a “best selling” book, outselling every other book every printed. It is said to be the cause of wars and peace.
Then there’s this story.
Dr. E. V. Rieu was a distinguished British scholar, well known for his translations of the works of Homer into English. The publisher of Penguin Classics asked him to try his hand at the gospels. At the age of 60, having been a lifelong agnostic, Rieu agreed to try it. At that time his son said, “It will be interesting to see what father makes of the four gospels. It will be even more interesting to see what the four gospels make of father.” Within a year Dr. Rieu was converted to Christianity. He observed, “I got the deepest feeling that the whole material was extraordinarily alive. My work changed me. I came to the conclusion that these words bear the seal of the Son of Man and God” (Quoted by E. M. Blaiklock, “More and More Scripture Lives!” Christianity Today, 17 [Sept. 28, 1973]: 18–19).
Just recently, I was watching the second Harry Potter movie. This movie, and its predecessor, as well as the books, have caused quite a bit of controversy in the Christian Church. What are we to make of these books and films? Far from Christian, I contend that elements of them do contain allusions to Christian doctrine. The power of good over evil. The power of words to change things. The power of love, loyalty, friendship, and family.
“Isn’t it amazing what a little book can do in the hands of a silly little girl.”Tom Riddle, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (film version).
The same can be said of the Bible. A simple book – on the surface. But it is the power of God Almighty Himself! The Bible is God’s Word of Law and Gospel. The Law has the awesome power to cut us to our very souls, exposing who we are – sinners in desperate need of forgiveness. The Gospel restores us to our original place in God’s creation – giving us the forgiveness of our sins that was won by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The Bible, the Word of God, has amazing power. When combined with water, the words “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit” creates faith and saves a person from everlasting condemnation. When combined with bread and wine, the words “Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins” give exactly that – forgiveness of sins, life and salvation!
The Bible. It “has shallows through which a child may wade on its way to heaven, it has deep, dark, unfathomed pools that no eye can penetrate where the first step takes a giant beyond his depth. (Guthrie).”
