Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love.
Joel 2:13

“I Believe in the Forgiveness of Sins”

As we take this journey of belief, we make a statement of faith, “I believe in the Forgiveness of Sins.”

There are many ways to take a journey, but our journey of belief must include the forgiveness of sins.

On Ash Wednesday, many people have a cross of ashes on their foreheads or on the back of their hands. They are reminded by this of the fact that “we are dust and to dust we shall return.”

Why are we dust? Because of sin! And sin stinks!

But Jesus loves us! And that is why we include in this journey the forgiveness of sins. This journey with Jesus includes his forgiveness.

So, we can say, “I believe in the forgiveness of sins because through Christ God has declared pardon and forgiveness to all sinful humanity.”

That forgiveness and pardon was the result of Jesus’ death on the cross. That’s what we observe on Good Friday.

But that was 2000 years ago and in a land thousands of miles away!

Separated by such time and distance, how can we receive the forgiveness of sins that we believe in?

God Offers the Forgiveness of Sins in the Gospel & We Receive the Forgiveness of Sins Through Faith

It is offered in what we can actually hold in our hands, taste with our tongues, hear with our ears, and see with our eyes.

God offers the forgiveness of sins in the Gospel. In the Means of Grace.

Even though we were forgiven of all our sins by Jesus who died on the cross 2000 years ago, the forgiveness of sins is as close as a word, as close as a wafer and cup of wine, as close as water in a font.

As we take this journey, let us reflect on the daily renewal that comes from the forgiveness of sins.

Reflecting on What We Believe – the Forgiveness of Sins

Let us also reflect on what we believe – the forgiveness of sins that is ours because of the love of God in Christ Jesus.

Living Out What We Believe – the Forgiveness of Sins

As we take this journey, let us live out what we believe – the forgiveness of sins, forgiving others as we ourselves have been forgiven.

I was in an airport once, traveling. This was a while ago. I noticed a person sitting in one of those little airport cafes. He was all by himself eating an airport dinner.

Later, on the plane, I saw him sitting by himself in First Class.

I couldn’t help but think how said and lonely it is to travel alone. It is much more exiting to travel with someone else, preferably someone you love!

As we take this journey, know this: you do not travel alone. We are traveling together.

Made possible by the forgiveness of sins.

Heavenly Father, bless us on this journey of belief, contrition, repentance and faith. As we travel together, may we always know your great love for us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
