For thus says the Lord God: Behold, I, I myself will search for my sheep and will seek them out.

Searching for a Smile

Mitch has just turned 39 years old.

There’s something about that last year of a person’s thirties that really messes with the mind.

Mitch is unhappy. He’s unsure that his career is really “for him.” He mopes around a lot. He has become something of a hypochondriac.

Finally, his wife has had enough. She wants Mitch to go on a trip with his two best friends. Two weeks of driving cattle across New Mexico and Colorado.

She tells him to “go find your smile.”

Mitch searches for his smile on that trip. Not just his smile but meaning and purpose for his life. He also searches for what will make him happy and fulfilled.

The happy ending to Mitch’s story is that he finds his smile. He finds his purpose. He finds that he isn’t in the wrong job, he’s just going to do it better.

(This story is the premise of the movie City Slickers from Columbia Pictures, 1991.)

Seeking What is Valuable

When something is valuable to you, you seek it out.

I’m not talking about the car keys you misplaced or the wallet that’s not where you thought you left it.

I’m talking about what’s really valuable, like your purpose in life, your family-time, your relationship with family and God.

I heard once that no man, on his death bed, ever said that he wished he had spent more time at the office.

I also heard once that no man carries pictures of his boss around in his wallet.

So why do we spend so much time and energy on our work and pursuing a paycheck to the exclusion of our family and faith?

We can learn from God about this.

God Seeks What is Valuable

What did God consider valuable? The world he created? The wealth and riches of kingdoms and churches?

No. We know this because we never hear God seeking out these things.

What we do read about God seeking out is his sheep, his flock, his people.

You and me. That’s what God considers valuable!

So valuable that he seeks us out himself. He doesn’t send angels or prophets or priests to do it.

He seeks us out himself.

Through his Son, Jesus Christ.

He is our Lord and God. Jesus saves us all from sin, death, and the power of the devil because we are valuable to God.

He loves us. He seeks us out.

Let us seek out what – who – we love as well!

Heavenly Father, your love for me is so awesome! You seek me out, even when I am lost in my sins. Thank you for saving me through your Son, Jesus Christ. In His name I pray. Amen.
