Devotion – In the Right Place at the Right Time

Then the Lord said, “I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters. I know their sufferings….”

Putting the Shift On

Have you been watching the World Series? As of this writing, there will be a game seven in the 2019 World Series. Exciting! Especially in a household that has a passion for baseball (like mine).

You may have noticed that when certain players come to bat, the opposing team puts on a “shift” to defend against him. Instead of the traditional locations for the infielders, they are “shifted” to new positions.

These new positions are determined by the statistics compiled about that individual hitter and where he typically puts the ball into play.

The manger of the team puts his infielders in the right place (so he thinks) for the right time of catching the ball and making the out.

God’s “Shift” is Always Perfect

God has a way of always putting the right person in the right spot and just the right time.

One of the more prominent examples is that of Moses. His birth was at just the right time for a Hebrew boy to be saved from a lawful death (according to the edict of Pharaoh). His sister, mother, and the daughter of Pharaoh were all positioned by God exactly where they needed to be to save Moses’ life.

The Right Place at the Right Time

Moses would be saved. He would grow up. He would be made ready by God for the perfect moment to save His people.

In Moses’ story is the burning bush, the Passover, the parting of the Red Sea (foreshadowing Holy Baptism), the Tabernacle and the Ark of the Covenant, and the Promised Land.

This was all carefully orchestrated by God and the pieces all placed perfectly by God.

History Repeats Itself

Throughout the Old Testament this Godly Shift would be repeated over and over. The story of Joshua, Gideon, David, Elijah and Elisha.

All these Godly Shifts pointing to the ultimate shift – the birth, life, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ!

One More Shift Story

About 1500 years after Jesus, there was another shift put on by God. A man by the name of Martin Luther was born on November 10, 1483 in Germany. He would grow up and spark a reformation that bears his name.

In this shift, pieces and players were positioned perfectly to bring Europe out of the Middle Ages into the Renaissance, open the Great Exploration Age, and – most importantly – bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ back to light.

Because of Luther, people would once again hear the amazing story of God’s salvation from sin, death, and the devil through Jesus Christ.

It’s Now Your Turn

God is still putting a shift on. He has positioned you to be exactly where you are right now. For what? To proclaim the Gospel! To be a witness to Jesus!

Right where you are! God has placed you exactly where He needs you to be so someone else can hear the Good News of Jesus Christ!

You are in the right place and the right time!

Heavenly Father, thank you for placing people like Moses, Martin Luther, and me in just the right place at the right time. I pray that You will use me to proclaim the Gospel to the people around me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
